Salomons, David

Salomons, David
(1797-1873)
English banker and communal leader. He was a founder of the joint stock banking system in England. An advocate of the admission of Jews into English public affairs, he was the first Jewish sheriff, alderman and lord mayor of London. He was elected to parliament in 1851, and took his seat without taking the Christian oath; as a result he was ejected, which drew promi-nently to public attention the problem of Jewish parliamentary disabilities.
